OWWA continues helping distressed OFWs repatriated from abroad

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- A physically-challenged overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was safely transported to her residence in Carmen, Davao del Norte on January 4, after being repatriated due to the accident she met while working in Kuwait.

The repatriation team from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Region XI assisted the OFW upon arrival at the Davao International Airport and ensured her safety in bringing her home through the provision of free transportation.

As a distressed worker, she will be entitled to livelihood assistance under OWWA’s “Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay” program.

This physically-challenged OFW was among the 22 distressed OFWs who were provided with assistance by OWWA-XI since the beginning of 2024.

From January to December 2023, OWWA-XI assisted a total of 1,779 distressed OFWs from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Malaysia, Thailand, Jordan, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong.

OWWA-XI Officer-in-Charge Gina Mae L. Quimora said that their airport assistance team continuously provides assistance to all distressed OFWs, including those physically and mentally challenged OFWs upon arrival at the Davao International Airport.

“We have airport teams who are always ready 24/7 to provide the appropriate assistance needed by the OFWs.  We also provide assistance to the families of deceased OFWs (human remains) who arrived at the airport,” Quimora stated.

OWWA-XI Regional Information Officer Maricel Sarabillo said the causes of their repatriation were mostly due to medical or physical illness, mental illness, maltreatment or mistreatment and physical abuse, overwork, and contract violations.

“Those in wheelchairs or stretchers are transported through the ambulance either to their home or to the hospital, or the office provides fare to those who don’t have money, for them to go home to their respective province,” Sarabillo added.

Quimora encouraged all OFWs and their families to get in touch with their office if they need assistance, saying, “We have various programs and services available for the OFWs and their dependents.”

The OFWs and their families are further advised to call OWWA-XI’s hotline number 0963-5385149 or telephone number (082)-2218593, or they may visit the regional office located at Monteverde St., Davao City, so that their concerns will be addressed. (CLC/ PIA-XI/OWWA-XI)
