Zamboanga City starts water rationing due to El Niño

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) – The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) has initiated rationing water in the city’s West Coast and Central areas, which are primarily serviced by PrimeWater Infrastructure Corporation.

PrimeWater resorted to rationing due to the 10 percent reduction in normal water production attributed to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon to the Saaz River.

With the intermittent rains failing to replenish the raw water supply, the ZCWD finds it necessary to regulate water consumption in the identified areas. The implemented schedule, which can be accessed on the ZCWD's official channels, details the allotted periods for water availability.

The reduction in Prime Water production stems from the adverse effects of El Niño on the Saaz River, a vital water source for the region. The situation has prompted the need for a measured and controlled distribution of water resources to ensure sustainability during this challenging period.

Moreover, to address the impact of the reduced water production, the ZCWD will intensify water deliveries in the affected areas. This proactive measure aims to alleviate the potential inconvenience caused by the rationing and maintain a reasonable level of service to residents.

The ZCWD urges residents and businesses in the West Coast and Central areas to familiarize themselves with the provided water rationing schedule. Additionally, the water district advises implementing water conservation practices to stretch available resources and minimize disruption during this period of reduced supply.

Residents are advised to store water in covered containers as the ZCWD implements water rationing in the West Coast and Central areas. When water service resumes, discoloration or "lubog" is expected, and users are encouraged to let the water flow until it clears, reserving the initial flow for non-drinking purposes like flushing toilets. Areas not covered by the rationing schedule will receive water from Production Wells and Spring Sources. If the water supply improves, ZCWD may release water ahead of schedule.
