97 amputees walk again with new feet in Zambo Sur

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR (PIA) - Nearly a hundred amputees can now walk again after they were each given a new set of artificial limbs under a program facilitated by the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Disability Affairs Office.

The “Bag-ong Tuig, Bag-ong Tiil: Bag-ong Pag-asa” successfully reached out to 97 persons with disabilities (PWD) and were selected to benefit from the Jaipur Foot Camp program.

The project was rolled out in collaboration with the Tzu Chi Foundation, Zamboanga City Medical Center Physical and Rehab Medicine, and Zamboanga del Sur Athletes with Disabilities Association.

Ricardo S. Cumajig, a resident of Tukuran, is one of the grateful recipients of the program.

According to his daughter, Rebecca, her father’s leg was amputated a year ago due to diabetes, and had been confined to his bed as he has not been able to walk even with his crutches.

Cumajig was able to regain hope and a chance to walk again thanks to the program of the province administration.

"Dako kaayo among kalipay. Di gyud ma-express ang among kalipay sa iyang pangandoy sa Ginoo nga tagaan siya. Gitubag gyud sa Ginoo ang iyang [pag-ampo] nga makatiil siya (We are very happy. Our joy cannot be expressed for his dream, granted by God, to walk again. His [prayers] have been answered)," said Rebecca.

According to the Tzu Chi Foundation, Zamboanga del Sur broke records in all areas they visited, having the highest number of participants.

PDAO chief Miriam A. Llanos expressed their gratitude for the assistance from various organizations in the program, including the Tzu Chi Foundation. They also acknowledged the continuous support of the provincial government under the leadership of Governor Victor J. Yu, the local chief executives, and municipal PDAO focal persons.

Llanos shared that their request for help from the Tzu Chi Foundation was successful this year, bringing light to fellow Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who will now receive new limbs.

The program has brought happiness and gratitude to the beneficiaries. With their new limbs, these individuals can now walk and continue with their daily lives more easily and meaningfully. (APG/RVC/EDT/HTB/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur/ with photos and reports from PDAO Zamboanga del Sur)
