CALAMBA CITY, Laguna (PIA) -- The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Calauag, Quezon has recognized the role of the Agta tribe in preserving and protecting the environment in their communities.
As the Agta tribe resides near the Calauag River, which passes through Brgy. Villa Espina known for its lush vegetation and diverse flora, CENRO believes it is important to involve the tribe in environmental protection initiatives to improve and safeguard the local environment and natural resources.
To kickstart these efforts, a tree-growing activity was organized where a total of 200 seedlings, including native and fruit-bearing trees such as lipote, guyabano, narra, kasoy, kalumpit, and ilang-ilang, were planted.
During the activity, CENRO Calauag Forester II Aleli C. Alvares discussed the concept of sustainable development, covering topics such as site preparation, tree species, and site sustainability. She also demonstrated the proper way of handling seedlings.
CENRO cited the importance of partnering with the Agta community to promote and monitor the planted seedlings, as well as maintain the planting site in the long run. Consequently, the activity has been called "tree-growing" instead of "tree-planting."
Forester Joselito D. Barros, head of DENR-CENRO Calauag, highlighted the significance of collaboration in promoting environmental initiatives.
"The commendable efforts of Villa Espina ES and various stakeholders from government and private entities are significant for the community's involvement in forest conservation and protection in the area," said Barros.
Cyrene C. Oseña, a professor from Philippine Normal University - South Luzon, also attended the activity noting the importance of active community participation in achieving the program's success.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Joel R. Jonson, the Battalion Commander of the 85th Infantry Sandiwa Battalion of the Philippine Army, urged the public to work together not only to preserve the country's natural heritage but also to ensure a sustainable future for the next generations.
"The Villa Espina Community Forestry Program exemplifies the power of collective action. By working together, we are not only preserving our natural heritage but also ensuring a sustainable future for the next generations. This initiative showcases our commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being," Lt/Col. Jonson said. (CO/PIA-4A; with reports from DENR CALABARZON)
