Mambajao to involve youth in local governance

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin(PIA)-- The municipal government of Mambajao in Camiguin plans to tap the National Youth Commission in carrying out its vision to involve the youth in all aspects of local governance.

“We have to coordinate with the National Youth Commission and other agencies para mahimong effective atong mga plano [We have to coordinate with the National Youth Commission and other agencies to make our plans effective],” said Mambajao Councilor Lander Cutab.

With a vision to actively engage the youth in nation-building and promote peace, Cutab said the local government pushed for the enactment of the Mambajao Youth Development Code, an ordinance designed to address the unique needs and aspirations of Mambajao's younger population.

It encompasses a series of youth consultations, providing technical assistance, capacity-building training, and the creation of development council networks through collaboration with various community-based organizations and educational institutions.

Recognizing the role of the youth development council members, the councilor highlighted their efforts in developing the three-year Local Youth Development Plan (LYDP). This strategy, which represents a common goal across numerous youth sectors dedicated to enhancing youth development in Camiguin, acts as a cornerstone of advocacy for young involvement in nation-building and empowerment.

"LYDP is more than just a plan; it is a covenant. It is a shared vision of various youth sectors that commit to strengthening youth development in Camiguin,” he said.

Looking ahead, Cutab also proposes the digitalization of tourism-related strategies and improvements to the tourism code in Camiguin. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the evolving landscape of technology and digitalization, ensuring the sustainability and growth of tourism in the region.

Noting this goal, the youth are encouraged to share their familiarity with social media platforms to enhance the online presence of Camiguin's tourism and champion responsible tourism practices, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation.

“Ato usab pagalantawon kung unsa atong madungag para sa atong turismo nga diha nato ma-regulate ug unsa pa'y mga changes, especially that the technology and the digitalization aspect kay nisulod na [We also need to look at what we can contribute to our tourism so that we can regulate other changes, especially with the rise of technological advancements and digitalization],” he said.

Cutab added that the ordinances lead the community toward a future characterized by youth participation and well-being as Mambajao moves toward a youth-led governance paradigm. As the journey continues, the youth of Mambajao are seen to lead the charge in creating a future that is more inclusive. (KAPG/PIA-10/Camiguin)

To identify youth development projects and training opportunities to be prioritized in Mambajao, the Local Youth Development Office held the “Pagmugna,” June 2–3, 2023, at the Mccormic-Residence Resort, Camiguin. Aside from discussing the youth code and youth development, the LYDO also tackled the establishment of the Camiguin Youth Network at the said event. (JME/PIA-10/Camiguin)
