Beyden was going home from school when he found the money, which he immediately surrendered to the municipal police station. In an interview, he mentioned that keeping the money never crossed his mind.
“Edi sumakay at dyay motor ket papaandarek, adda nakitak nga kulay blue sunga napan ko kitan, kunak nu play money ket idi napan ko pinidot ket kwarta met. Awan met napanunut ko nga alan diay kwarta,” [When I was about to ride my motor, I saw something colored blue and I went to check. At first I thought it was play money but when I picked it up, it was real money. I did not think of keeping the money] he said.
Beyden encouraged his fellow youth to be always honest.
“Haan kayu nga agal-ala ti haan yu bagi ta baka kasapulan diay makin bagi ti inala u ket baka adda blessings nga umay kenyayu,” [Don’t get what is not yours because the rightful owner might need it. Blessings will come your way.]
The Besao MPS also saluted Beyden for his honesty, and thanked both his parents and teachers for instilling good values to him .
“You have spelled out the true meaning of honesty and integrity, and we hope that other students will follow this example in the future. Your good deed is worthy of praise and emulation.”
Meanwhile, the Ifugao Sangguniang Panlalawigan also recently commended Azarel Lex Cayong, a 4th year student of the Ifugao State University-Lagawe Campus, for handing over to the police a pouch he found containing identification cards, an ATM card, and P16,000 cash. (JDP/VJLT-PIA CAR, Mt. Province)
