Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra outreach concert wows Capiceños

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra has indulged thousands of Capiceños and visitors from the neighboring provinces and cities in the region into an evening of classical, broadway, OPM, and pop music, among others, during an outreach concert on Jan. 21 at the Dinggoy Roxas Civic Center in Roxas City.

The world–class performance dubbed "Kumpas, Tunog kag Kiay" (Compass, Beat, and Wiggle) is the final leg in the Visayas of the PPO of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) to bring arts and culture closer to all the Filipinos.

“We are spending more time on the road to bring our festivals, live performances, workshops, training, and exhibitions to get a wider audience and build relationships,” said CCP president Michelle Nikki Junia.

Junia, in her message during the concert, was also impressed by the city’s richness in the field of arts including National Artist for Music Jovita Fuentes, who was the first Filipino international star in the world of opera.

The province also takes pride in Daisy Hontiveros Abellana as a National Artist awardee in Theater in 1999.

The two-hour concert of the PPO was under the baton of resident conductor Herminigildo Ranera who presented all the different instrument performers of the orchestra and the unique and distinct sound they contribute to the delight of the full-packed audience in the civic center.

The performers were divided into four families – the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

“The performance of the PPO as expected was outstanding. All the instruments playing in unison produced a wonderfully put-together masterpiece,” said a spectator and music enthusiast Maribeth Baldonado, who is the Public Information Officer of DepEd – Division of Roxas City.

The concert was made possible through the initiative of USWAG Ilonggo Representative Jojo Ang and the support of Roxas City mayor Ronnie Dadivas and other local officials and partners.

“Tonight is a very rare opportunity for each of us because seldom we can witness the live performance of a full orchestra- our very own Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra,” Dadivas said.

The event will also be historic for the civic center as it will be the last for the facility, since it opened as a public venue for gatherings and activities in the late 1980s, before it is redeveloped and reconstructed into a modern multi-event building, Dadivas noted.

Ang thanked the CCP for bringing the PPO to Capiz for a remarkable musical experience among the Capiznons.

“Let our hearts beat in harmony with the majestic notes and melodies of tonight’s performances. May we be united with music in this evening filled with thanksgiving,” Ang said. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
