MANILA, (PIA) -- The National Security Council (NSC) has acknowledged a survey indicating strong public support for a bolder stance in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) dispute.

The Tugon ng Masa (The Public's Response) Fourth Quarter survey, conducted by OCTA Research, revealed that 72 percent of Filipinos favor asserting territorial rights through expanded naval patrols and troop presence, a significant increase from previous polls.

"Consistent with the views of the people, we are prioritizing the modernization of the armed forces and the coast guard," Eduardo Año, National Security Adviser, said.

Año emphasized the ongoing acquisition of modern equipment and increased maritime and air patrols, with further exercises planned alongside the United States and other regional partners.

The NSC affirmed the importance of public opinion, noting the survey's reflection of "great concern" regarding the WPS. However, Año acknowledged the diversity of views, highlighting the 70 percent of respondents advocating for diplomatic and peaceful solutions alongside military action.

"We emphasize the importance of a comprehensive national strategy that encompasses both military and diplomatic efforts," Año said. He assured the public that the Marcos administration is committed to carefully evaluating the survey results and formulating policies aligned with the nation's collective aspirations.

Año further encouraged continued public discourse on national security matters, emphasizing the crucial role of unity in addressing challenges and securing a prosperous future for the Philippines.
