Water supply in Dumaguete City gets a boost amid El Niño

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Over 400 residents in four barangays in Dumaguete City will  no longer endure low water supply especially in the morning.

This after the Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW) completed the installation of a new pumping station and a reservoir that will bring more water to the barangays of Batinguel, Taclobo, Motong, and Daro

MDW built the pumping station to address the concerns of its consumers over the unstable supply of tap water in the four barangays.

The new pumping station is connected by a transmission pipeline from Barangay Cadawinonan to Barangay Candau-ay, which will improve water service to consumers in the northern part of the city.

Candau-ay Barangay Captain Teodulo Salvoro Jr. of Candau-ay welcomed the development as he thanked MDW and the local government for addressing the lack of water supply due to low pressure in his barangay.

“They made life easier for the residents who will now enjoy steady water supply for their daily needs,” said Salvoro.

Cadawinonan Barangay Captain Venus Cataylo is  also thankful as the new pumping station will mean better water service for the village residents.

“Kami nalipay gud mi sa installation sa PS 21 tungod kay dako kini ikatabang sa among constituents ug  kasikbit na kabarangayan na sige reklamo sa kulang sa suplay sa tubig labi na sayo sa kabuntagon (We are happy for the installation as this would help our constituents and neighboring barangays who have been complaining on the lack of supply of water especially early in the morning),” said Cataylo.

He also assured the residents in the areas where the water pipes traverse that they would also be benefiting from the more stable water supply.

Better water production

MDW chief operating officer David Berba said the facility is projected to produce up to three million liters per day, benefiting more than 5,000 households or around 20,000 residents in the city.

Berba assured that with the new pumping station, water supply in the city will not be affected amid the El Niño phenomenon.

“This pumping station is significant in the organization’s goal to meet the water production and quality demand for consumers in Dumaguete City and proof of our commitment to excellence and the welfare of the community we serve,” said Berba.

He added that the new facility is a step forward in ensuring the sustainable provision of clean and safe water for the people of Dumaguete City.

Berba said the pumping station worth P30 million started to be operational on January 11.

“We have ample water supply until the next 30 years per our assessment in terms of deep well sustainability,” said Berba. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
