La Union marks World Wetlands Day with tree planting

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) -- The Provincial Government of La Union, through its Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and in partnership with the municipal government of  San Juan, marked this year’s World Wetlands Day celebration with a tree planting activity held at Barangay Sta. Rosa in San Juan Town on Feb.1.

The World Wetlands Day, which is anchored on the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,” highlights how all aspects of human beings are tied to the world's wetlands, including the physical, mental, and environmental health.

Some 200 Bittaog seedlings were planted along the riverbank in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Education (DepEd), private individuals, and local officials who also committed to monitor the seedlings they have planted.

In his message, Jay-Ar Raquedan of PENRO La Union, said the tree planting activity helps ensure the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands in the town.

“Napakaimportante po itong pagtatanim ng puno upang maprotektahan natin hindi lang po wetlands kundi ang totality ng ating environment kasi pini-prevent nito ang pagkakaroon ng erosion,” said Raquedan.

He also urged the public to continue taking part in the province’s bayanihan initiave in support of the PGLU’s ‘Kalikasan Naman’ campaign.
