SIQUIJOR, Siquijor, February 5 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Central Visayas Information Sharing Network Foundation, Inc. (CVISNET) are proposing to establish a comprehensive barangay information system (BIS) in Siquijor town.
Engr. Reinhold Jek Abing, DOST senior science research specialist and information officer, said the proposed project aims to equip the 42 barangays in the town with a user-friendly centralized platform for managing crucial data.
During the inception meeting, Engr. Jeff Llanto, executive director of CVISNET, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership with DOST and Siquijor municipal government in what he described as a “transformative project."
"CVISNET's expertise in local governance and information technology, combined with the commitment of our partners, ensures the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of this initiative," Llanto said.
CVISNET is a pioneering effort by the government and private sectors to harness Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with productivity and business enhancement solutions.
It provides ICT services ranging from basic web presence and internet connection to disaster communications and e-governance for local government units.

“The initiative recognizes the vital role barangays play in shaping the future of the communities,” said Engr. Mario de la Peña, DOST provincial science and technology director.
"By putting technology at the forefront of barangay operations, we empower local leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently, and ultimately, contribute to a more efficient and responsive Siquijor," de la Peña said.
Municipal planning development coordinator Gilbert Briones, who serves as Siquijor LGU’s focal person for the said project, expressed his optimism of the project as he highlighted its potential.
Briones said the program signifies their commitment to inclusive development.
"Equipping our barangays with this innovative tool will significantly enhance transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement, paving the way for a more progressive and empowered Siquijor," he said.
The consultative/inception meeting was held to gather initial feedback from the project stakeholders.
The inputs will be instrumental in preparing the project proposal for submission to DOST Region 7 for possible funding through its Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Project.
Abing said the Siquijor LGU is set to submit its proposal and all documentary requirements to DOST7 this month for review and evaluation.
He said the DOST 7 Regional Technical Evaluation Committee (RTEC) will review and evaluate the proposal of LGU Siquijor, after which the RTEC will endorse the proposal to the DOST 7 regional director for approval and funding. (RAC/PIA7 Siquijor)
