Stronger sister-cities linkage to create more opportunities for Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – The recent celebration of Chinese New Year in this city proves how united and organized the Chinese-Filipino community in the metro, which China’s Consul General to Cebu Zhang Zhendescribes as one of the backbones of the local development.

Zhen, in a news conference, added that aside from the usual partnership between the city and the local Chinese community, Iloilo City should also strengthen its linkages with its sister cities in China to have more people-to-people exchanges and cooperation, bringing more opportunities for both parties.

Consul General Zhang Zhen, Chinese Consul General in Cebu, during her visit, said Iloilo and China have a very long history of close connection and mutual learning.

“We all know that during the pandemic years the exchanges remained at a very low level. But now after the pandemic everything has come back to normal, so I will suggest that both sides make good use of the sister city relationship and to explore more opportunities and possibilities to have tangible win-win cooperation which can bring more benefits to both sides,” the consul stressed.

Zhen pointed out that these cities in China are “very strong”, as they have their own features and strengths which Iloilo City can benefit from through exchanges and cooperation.
She was referring to Qingdao wherein Iloilo established sister cities ties in 2000; Guangzhou City in Fujian province in 2020; and Wuhan in Hubei province in 2021.

“These big cities have vigorous potential and they have many, many strong sectors. So, I think the potential for the bilateral cooperation for Iloilo city and these three cities are huge and great,” she said.

Zhen noted that exchanges and cooperation in education should be one of the priorities, as she acknowledged the high level of education in Iloilo City, noting that exchange programs for students and teachers could benefit both parties.

“The potential is great for agriculture, education, green energy, sustainable development, urbanization, even tourism also. If the visa policy to Chinese can ease, then I’m sure the two sides, the tourism bureaus and travel agencies can have better cooperation. The potential is great. Here we have a lot of talents and a lot of the population high percentage have good and high education,” she added.

Meanwhile, Zhen recognized the long history of close connection and mutual learning between Ilonggos and the Chinese community, saying that these things “show vividly that the two cultures and the people enjoy the time and bound of friendship.”

“I am also confident that the Filipino-Chinese community here will continue to serve as a bridge for the two people and culture… Bringing more creative ideas, investments, cooperation, opportunities, and development models to the local societies,” she added. (AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo)
