BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology is connecting far-flung areas of Apayao to the world as part of its free Wi-Fi program.

DICT regional director Reynaldo Sy and Apayao provincial director Virginia Baculi together with Gov. Elias Bulut Jr., Congresswoman Eleanor Bulug-Begtang, and National Youth Commission Executive Director Leah Villalon, turned over six low earth orbit satellites for geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities during the province’s 29th founding anniversary program lon February 13.

The satellite internet packs were received by Calasan Mayor Shamir Bulut, Conner Mayor Jeorico Bayawa, Flora Mayor Rodolfo Juan, Kabugao Mayor Bensmar Ligwang, Sta. Marcela Mayor Evelyn Martinez and Pudtol Mayor Hector Pascua.

Sy said the DICT has partnered with Starlink, a SpaceX satellite internet constellation providing high-speed, low-latency internet access in remote areas, for this project.

 “Through the use of low earth orbit satellites, we can provide high bandwidth capacity at a very low latency, which makes this technology most suitable and reliable for these locations,” he said.

“We hope that this initiative will spark a change and drive us towards a connected and empowered society,” he added.

Sy led a team in installing the Starlink and the other equipment at the Tawit National High School in Cacalaggan, Pudtol.

"The Free Wi-Fi Program is a key component of our efforts to bridge the digital gap,  and empower every Cordilleran with access to information and opportunities. The installation of Starlink at Tawit NHS is a testament to our dedication to bringing reliable and high-speed internet to even the most remote corners of our region."

He said the installation at Tawit NHS holds promise for education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, demonstrating the potential of satellite technology.

Baculi emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative, particularly for the Tawit NHS. 

“In this age of digital transformation, connectivity is not just a luxury but a necessity. The Free Wi-Fi Program and the installation of Starlink at Tawit NHS mark a significant milestone in our mission to ensure that no community is left behind in the digital revolution."
