DOST, ESWF partner to boost Philippine eSports, gaming industry

MANILA, (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the eSports World Federation (ESWF) on February 19 to support the growth and development of the country's gaming industry and digital sports.

The partnership aims to capitalize on the Philippines' booming gaming sector, with 43 million active gamers and a video game market valued at US$1.26 billion in 2020. Mobile gaming alone contributed US$900 million, highlighting the industry's substantial potential.

"This MOU underscores DOST's commitment to support the creative industries, including gaming," said Science Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

"The uninterrupted global shift to digital technologies positions eSports for continued growth, not just for entertainment, but also for economic development through job creation."

The collaboration focuses on several key areas:

  • Game development and design: Fostering local talent in creating and developing digital games with educational, cultural, and scientific and technological themes.
  • Training and skills development: Equipping aspiring developers and eSports professionals with necessary skills through workshops and seminars.
  • Event and competition promotion: Jointly organizing conferences, seminars, training programs, and regional and national exhibits and competitions.
  • Attracting foreign investments: Fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem within the Philippine gaming sector.

"We can unlock the full potential of eSports as a driver for technological growth and development in the Philippines," said Arniel Gutierrez, founder and CEO of ESWF. "The industry relies heavily on cutting-edge technologies, and through this partnership, we can support Filipino creativity and innovation."

The DOST emphasizes protecting intellectual property rights of Filipino developers and welcomes proposals for potential funding from universities and colleges. The science department also supports state universities and colleges by funding research and development in digital sports and game development.

This partnership marks a significant step towards revolutionizing the Philippine gaming industry, harnessing local talent, and leveraging technology to create a thriving eSports ecosystem that benefits both players and developers. (PIA-NCR)
