Ilonggo PWDs get wheelchairs, assistive devices

ILOILO CITY -- The Iloilo Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently distributed  40 wheelchairs, four-wheeled walkers, three pairs of crutches, and an adult walker to PWDs from 20 towns.

The beneficiaries came from the towns of Oton, Miag-ao, Tubungan, San Miguel, New Lucena, Leon, Alimodian, Santa Barbara, Maasin, Mina, Calinog, Badiangan, San Enrique, Dingle, Passi City, Dumangas, Banate, Dueñas, Ajuy, and Estancia.

According to PSWDO chief Sarah Barayuga, the recipients have been evaluated by trained assessors and these devices were customized based on their sizes and needs.

“It’s not one-size-fits-all. The recipients have been assessed as to the types of wheelchairs suited for them. This way, we could make sure that the devices could be used by the PWDs,” Barayuga shared.

To recall, it was last year when the provincial government signed a memorandum of agreement with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for an additional 800 wheelchairs and 834 assistive devices for the province of Iloilo. It is the second biggest provision of the LDS Church next to La Union.

Meanwhile, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias thanked the LDS Church for donating mobility devices to the provincial government since 2018.

The provincial administrator said that ensuring the welfare of PWDs is part of the provincial government’s social justice agenda.

Banias also conveyed that Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.  is also looking into the establishment of physical rehabilitation centers in district hospitals to cater to the needs of PWDs. (AAL/LMLE/PIA Iloilo)
