Judo goes grassroots across Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Philippine Judo Federation (PJF) on Feb. 18 concluded the Mindanao leg of its awareness caravan in Davao City. 

The activity initiated by the Philippine Sports Commission aims to reach out to the grassroots communities across Mindanao.

“The intention was to bring judo to parts of the community na wala pa (there is no judo yet), but for those cities with established judo organizations, they were very willing and organized themselves to help out in the efforts,” PJF president Alexander Sulit t said.

One of the instructions he gave to the key people of the caravan was to identify point persons in the community who have the potential to continue the program.

Sulit said one of their objectives is to sustain the gains of the caravan.

“Immediately after this caravan is that by next month, this March, we will be having a coaches or instructors certification course; we will be inviting those identified potential point persons to undergo that seminar, and they will be ,so it is a continuation,” he said.

The caravan, held at the University of the Philippines Mindanao campus in Mintal, involved a judo clinic in Davao, which was attended by 160 individuals.

He said the activity was open even to non-judo practitioners.

“The idea really was to bring judo to communities na wala pang judo,” Sulit said.

The event in Davao was also to introduce and establish judo in parts of the city where there is still no presence of the sport.

Sulit said he sees great potential for growth of Judo in Davao as it is considered a powerhouse region with Dabawenyo judokas who excelled in international competitions.

He said the PJF is grateful for the support given by the community, where several leading judokas, along with other private organizations such as University of the Philippines Alumni Association, Ecomed, and Good Cargo Solutions, provided vital assistance to the PSC-initiated event.

“PSC tapped us to do the program for them because PSC also conducts these projects for other sports,” Sulit said.

The PJF is the National Sporting Association of Judo in the country and is at the forefront of propagating Japanese-origin martial arts in the country.

Before the last stop in Davao City, the PJF judo caravan was conducted in the Mindanao cities of Marawi, Iligan Gingoog, and Malaybalay.  (RGA/PIA Davao)
