Negros Occidental makes big push for renewable energy

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) -- Negrense leaders are pushing to have renewable energy as the primary source of electric power in the province.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson led the launching of SecuRE Negros, a multi-stakeholder-whole-of-society approach, that aims to develop a roadmap for renewable energy development in the province.

The governor urged renewable energy industries to invest in Negros Occidental and seize the opportunity as the province opens its doors to clean and sustainable sources of power.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson leads stakeholders in a the press conference and launching of  SecuRE Negros.

"I call on investors to see this literally as a golden opportunity to plug in the exciting future of renewable energy in Negros Occidental," Lacson said.

Jeanette Patindol, the team leader of Negros Occ. Power Sector Assessment Study   (NOPSAS), shared the various natural sources of power that the provincial government is exploring, including rooftop solar photovoltaic systems (PV) with intelligent hybrid inverters, solar power, wind power, hydropower, waste-to-energy/biomass, energy storage/battery energy storage system (BESS), cogeneration/combined heat power (CHP), stand-alone hybrid systems, vehicle to grid, flywheels microturbines and microgrid.

"Even if we work out with the existing power systems, we are carving out new

pathways but staying within the system in trying to improve some decades-old problems.   We are creating new pathways for distributed energy resources or distributed energy systems which are more decentralized and consumers can become their own producers (of energy)," Patindol said.

Lacson has garnered the firm support of the church, with the bishops of the province-Gerardo Alminaza of the Diocese of San Carlos, Louie Galbines of the Diocese of Kabankalan, and Patricio Buzon of the Diocese of Bacolod, expressing their support for SecuRE.

The church leaders have pledged to work hand in hand with the provincial government, local communities, and all stakeholders in implementing the SecuRE Negros Program, seeing the urgency of addressing environmental degradation and the disproportionate impact of climate change on the poor and the vulnerable.

“Whether driven by consumer demand or power utility needs, the future of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) is exciting, and we in the Provincial Government, other LGUs, the private sector, and even the Church are taking this path towards energy security,” Lacson added.
