MANILA, (PIA) -- Overseas Filipinos should register for the 2025 midterm elections as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) implements internet voting in 76 foreign posts.

OFW Partylist Rep. Marissa Magsino made the call after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) recently confirmed that internet voting for eligible overseas voters will be available.

To confirm their eligibility for the 2025 elections, overseas Filipinos need to verify their registration status. Those whose registrations have been canceled  due to non-participation in the past two elections must reactivate their voting status.

As of January 15, Comelec reported having around 1.096 million registered overseas voters. 

The registration period is open until September 30, 2024.

OFWs can complete the registration process in embassies, consulates and other areas designated for voter registration by presenting their Philippine passport.

For those within the Philippines, visit the following offices: 

• Comelec Office for Overseas Voting (OFOV) extension office in Intramuros, Manila; 
• Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Consular Office NCR (Robinsons Galleria) in Pasig City; 
• DFA Office of Consular Affairs – ASEANA Business Park in Parañaque City; 
• Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in Mandaluyong City; 
• Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) in Quezon City; or 
• Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in Manila.

"With internet voting being implemented for overseas Filipinos, I encourage all OFWs to seize this opportunity to exercise their right to suffrage," Magsino said. "But first, they must ensure their registration is active."

The Comelec said this seeks to increase the overseas voter turnout, which only saw 34 percent in the 2022 polls, slightly higher than 31 percent in the 2019 polls.

However, postal and personal modes for absentee voting would still be available in the 2025 elections, it added.

Advocacy for internet voting

Magsino actively advocated internet voting, by introducing House Bill 6770 in January 2023. The bill aims to amend the Overseas Voting Act of 2003 and allow voting through secure online platforms.

She also participated in technical working groups and demonstrations to refine the policy and technology for this initiative.

"This development will significantly ease the voting process for OFWs, allowing them to participate in shaping the nation's future," Magsino added. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
