Developed by the Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) and deployed by the DOST-National Capital Region across Metro Manila, STARBOOKS is a stand-alone kiosk containing a wealth of science, technology, and innovation (STI) information. This "all-in-one box" aims to revolutionize learning and research for students in the city.
City Librarian Rochelle Silverio welcomed the STARBOOKS unit, highlighting its potential to aid students conducting research with its extensive collection of scientific and investigatory materials, including theses and dissertations.
DOST-NCR Regional Director Romelen Tresvalles emphasized that STARBOOKS aligns with the Philippine Development Plan's goals to improve learning methods and student adaptability. He assured students of the accuracy and integrity of the kiosk's content, curated by DOST and regularly updated to ensure its timeliness and relevance.
According to the DOST-NCR website, STARBOOKS is designed to bridge the gap for those with limited or no access to STI resources, offering multiple access points and offline functionality. Users can tap into hundreds of digitized scientific studies and journals in various formats, including articles, audio, and video. Additionally, DOST provides free installation, content updates, system support, and user training.
STARBOOKS' pod-like design with a user-friendly interface ensures portability and accessibility. DOST Science and Research Assistant Nicholas Zapanta shared that around 3,000 units have been distributed to partner institutions, including Valenzuela City, with troubleshooting support readily available.
Valenzuelano students can now access the STARBOOKS kiosk at the Valenzuela City Library, located at the Valenzuela City Academic Center for Excellence. The library is open to the public free of charge, with varying hours on different floors.
This initiative demonstrates how technology and collaboration can enhance access to valuable resources, fostering a more vibrant learning environment for future generations in Valenzuela City. (PIA-NCR)
