LEGAZPI CITY (PIA) – The municipal council of Pandan in the province of Catanduanes has assured that it will maintain a strong partnership with the creative industry to use arts and culture as assets that can fuel the local economy and tourism.
In a recent session of the council, Vice Mayor Eric Rodriguez underlined the significance of collaboration in initiating programs that uplift the arts and culture scene.
Joannah Paula de Leon, a leader among artists in Pandan, was visibly happy when the municipal council pledged its support.
De Leon vowed that she, along with other local artists, would use art to promote abaca fiber, the main product not only of Pandan but also of the whole province of Catanduanes.
As a gesture of gratitude, she gifted Rodriguez and each of the municipal councilors a personalized painting.
Dubbed “Kape Sa Abaca,” the painting sought to promote the use of locally sourced abaca raw fiber (also known as Manila hemp) and contribute to community development.
De Leon said the project started in 2020 when demand for abaca was low, which was exacerbated by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local artists such as De Leon were limited in showcasing their talents due to the lack of access to materials. To overcome this, they used abaca fiber as their canvases instead.
"Kape Sa Abaca" is a visual representation of resilience and resourcefulness, said Rodriguez, also presiding officer of the council.
He promised to provide support for future art exhibits in the town.
