MANILA, (PIA) -- In line with the celebration of the National Arts Month, the local government of Malabon, Malaysian government, and Artdialogo conducted the “SENI Skwela 2024,” on Monday, February 26, showcasing the creativity and passion for arts of students in the city.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval and Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Dato Malik Melvin Castilleno, Interational Visual Artist and Artdialogo’s founder Ms. Anna Karina Jardin and Malabon Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Cecille Carandang led the activity at the Tinajeros National High School.
According to Mayor Jeannie, Seni Skwela 2024 provides the students a space for their artistic expression, and aims to immerse them in the vibrant cultures of Malaysia and the Philippines
She shared that the event is a creative Philippine-Malaysian cross-cultural empowerment program for the youth and art educators as well as the shared culture of both countries.
“Today, as we witness the fusion of artistic expressions in SENI Skwela, we see the tangible manifestation of the deep cultural connections nurtured through diplomatic collaborations. Art becomes the language that speaks beyond borders, embodying the spirit of friendship and cooperation that defines the enduring relations between the Philippines and Malaysia,” Malabon’s first lady mayor said.
“The very name of this project, 'SENI SKWELA,' beautifully captures the spirit of our collaboration. 'Seni', derived from Bahasa Melayu, symbolizes art, while 'Skwela', a colloquial term for 'eskwelahan' or school, represents a space where interests, skills, and knowledge are honed. This initiative signifies a vibrant exchange of dialogues, echoing the best practices from the rich cultural traditions of Malaysia and the Philippines,” she added.
During the program, artworks of students from Tinajeros National High School that tackles the shared culture and history of Malaysia and the Philippines and self expression were featured in an exhibit.
“Our nations have shared a historical journey marked by mutual respect, cooperation, and a collective commitment to regional stability. The establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1959 shortly after the independence of the then Federation of Malaysia, it marked the inception of a relationship rooted in shared interests and values,” the mayor added.
The mayor also shared that both countries have joined hands within regional organizations and have played pivotal roles in promoting peace, security, and economic development in the Southeast Asian region.
Students from different schools also participated in art workshops, an open forum, and a painting contest, where they showed passion in the arts and practiced self expression.
“This initiative is not just about art; it is about creating a dynamic platform for our students to express their talents. Through various exhibitions and showcases of talent we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity,” Mayor Jeannie said.
“Let us celebrate the beauty of art, the richness of culture, and the strength that lies in unity,” she added.
The Malaysian Ambassador, Ms. Jardin, Dr. Carandang and other guests also shared their inspirational messages to empower the students as they join several activities that were part of the event. (PIA-NCR)
