Basilan celebrates golden year, highlights remarkable journey to peace and development

ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) - As a tribute to its rich heritage and remarkable progress, the province of Basilan kicked off the celebration of its 50th founding anniversary from Feb. 27 to March 7.

With the theme "Basilan @50: Advancing our gains, expanding our capacities towards a better life for all," the week-long festivities dubbed "Pakaradjaan Basilan 2024" will showcase the province's resilience, unique cultural heritage, and significant strides towards peace and development.

The celebration started with a multi-stakeholders' caravan along the Basilan circumferential road, followed by the opening of an agro-industrial fair, a tepo and tennun expo, and a photo gallery exhibit. These events aim to highlight Basilan's journey towards unity, progress, and cultural preservation.

Basilan's 50th anniversary serves as a testament to its inspiring journey from challenging times to a province that now stands as a symbol of peace and development. The tepo and tennun expo, in particular, emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting the province's traditional weaving industry, which is a significant part of its cultural tapestry.

The photo exhibit will provide a visual journey through Basilan's history, showcasing its transformation over the past 50 years. This will not only serve as a reminder of the province's resilience but also inspire future generations to continue building upon the foundation laid by their predecessors.

General Alvin V. Luzon, brigade commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, Philippine Army, expressed his admiration for the province's beautiful attractions and culture. He also praised the efforts of local leaders and the people for their unity in achieving peace and progress in Basilan.

For his part, Board Member Atty. Jimael Salliman urged all stakeholders and the Basilenos to come together and celebrate the province’s golden anniversary in appreciation of its history and significant achievements. He stressed the important contributions of everyone to peace and development.

Meanwhile, Governor Jim Salliman highlighted the significant strides made in peace and security over the years. He further stressed that as the province of Basilan celebrates its golden milestone, the people come together to honor their shared history, achievements, and aspirations.
