VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, Mar. 1 (PIA) – The Ilocos Sur provincial government, in a bid to strengthen rabies awareness and control, distributed 1,000 vials of anti-rabies vaccine to all local government units (LGUs) on March 1.
This marks the start of a month-long campaign in observance of Rabies Awareness Month focused on prevention, control, and management.
Dr. Donna Mae Rosario, provincial veterinarian said, "This year, we're conducting a mass anti-rabies vaccination drive to cover more animals and significantly reduce the risk of rabies transmission. We've procured an additional 1,472 vaccine vials to support our cities and municipalities."
Despite ongoing efforts, the province recorded 10 canine rabies cases and two human rabies-related deaths in 2023.
The dog and cat population vaccinated only reached 63% (47,013 animals) out of a total of 70,000.
Dr. Rosario said, "We appeal to everyone to join the fight against rabies and achieve zero rabies by 2030. As pet owners, our responsibility lies in vaccinating our pets and keeping them leashed."
Governor Jeremias Singson commended the veterinary office's efforts and stressed the importance of public cooperation.
"Mitigating the dangers of rabies requires collective action. We encourage Ilocos Sur residents to advocate for responsible pet ownership and support a proactive public health strategy,” Governor Singson said.
He further stated, "Creating a rabies-free community is a shared responsibility. Every individual can contribute by taking proactive steps like pet vaccination and preventive measures. By working together, we can ensure the safety of both our people and pets from this preventable disease." (JCR/AMB/JMCQ, PIA Ilocos Sur)
