CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) -- Showcasing commitment to promoting gender equality and inclusivity, over 20 national line agencies and organizations in the region kicked off the National Women's Month celebration, bringing together advocates and leaders under the theme "WE for gender equality and an inclusive society," on March 1 at the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), Philippine Army, here.
A motorcade that paraded through the streets of Cagayan de Oro to highlight the significance of the month-long celebration followed a holy mass, which served as a collective prayer for the empowerment of women and the realization of an inclusive society.
"Today marks the beginning of a month-long tribute to the strength, resilience, and indomitable spirit that each of you brings to the forefront. In this celebration, let us not only honor the roles you play in our society, but also the extraordinary contributions you make to our society at large," said BGen. George Banzon, assistant division commander of the 4ID.
He urged the community, especially the women, to recognize the power they hold as individuals and collectively, and to stand together in unity in response to the call of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., to be in unison for progress.
Further emphasizing the shared commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society, Commission on Population and Development (CPD) Regional Director Neil Aldrin Omega, reflected on the progress made in northern Mindanao, particularly in narrowing gender gaps in health, education, and political empowerment. He highlighted the positive trends, including improvements in child survival, declining fertility rates, and increased lifespan.
However, Omega acknowledged the challenges that persist, such as disparities in labor force participation and traditional gender roles hindering women's opportunities for education and career development. He also addressed pressing issues like teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence, urging intensified efforts in responsible parenthood, family planning, and reproductive health.
"Women should be afforded equitable opportunities, free from the constraints of gender biases and stereotypes. We must vigorously implement gender and development initiatives, leaving no one behind," Omega said.
Explaining the rationale behind celebrating Women's Month, Philippine Commission on Women-North Mindanao Field Office (PCW-NMFO) GAD Specialist Khristine Kaye Calingin said the sub-theme, "Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan Patutunayan," aims to showcase and harness the full potential of women and girls in actively engaging in and reaping the benefits of national growth and development.
She also outlined the goals for this year's celebration, focusing on transforming culture toward a more equal and inclusive future.
Members of Men Opposed to Violence Everywhere (MOVE) from the Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 also participated in the event, taking the lead in promoting the rights of women. Highlighting the importance of involving men in advocating for gender equality and addressing issues related to violence against women, the group will hold a lecture for organizations and national line agencies on mobilizing their own MOVE group on March 15.
As the month-long celebration unfolds, the region, through Gender Advocates Normin, Inc. (GANI) and RGADC, remains dedicated to informing, engaging, and inspiring women and everyone to actively contribute to the transformation of gender norms and culture, fostering an inclusive and equitable future.
GANI, together with PCW-NMFO, will also hold school caravans in Cagayan de Oro City and Bukidnon to heighten awareness of women's rights and the laws protecting women. (RTP/PIA-10)
