DOST's Davao innovation center wins 2023 CSC Pagasa Award

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Food Processing Innovation Center - Davao (FPIC-Davao) of the Department of Science and Technology was conferred by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) as a Pagasa Awardee for its exceptional contributions to the food processing industry.

The CSC 2023 Search for Outstanding Government Workers' recognition is a significant milestone for FPIC-Davao in the field of food technology in the Davao region. They received the Pagasa Award in a recent ceremony held at Malacañang Palace.

It is the first Regional Food Innovation Center (RFIC) in the Philippines established as part of the DOST High Impact Technology Solutions program.

In a press release, CSC chairperson Karlo Nograles commended the center, saying, “Their collaborative efforts with multiple sectors have encouraged competition, inspired more students to pursue careers

in food technology, and contributed to the advancement of the food processing industry in the Davao Region.”

The recognition for DOST-XI not only showcased FPIC-Davao's excellence but also emphasized the significance of teamwork in advancing technology solutions in the government sector.

According to DOST-XI, in a press release, the FPIC-Davao “has embraced the pentahelix model of collaboration involving the academe as the host organization, government agencies, local government units, civil society organizations, and the media.”

The approach has positioned FPIC-Davao as the only RFIC with a separate legal personality, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) registration, and a copyrighted operations manual.

Through this dynamic collaboration model, the FPIC-Davao has achieved remarkable milestones, secured 37 utility model registrations, and garnered more than six prestigious awards between 2020 and 2022.

Among the achievements are the production of 48 innovative food products, ongoing negotiations for three products with potential technology adopters, and serving 174 customers on product development.

The FPIC-Davao team, led by DOST XI chief science research specialist Mirasol Domingo, played a pivotal role in fostering innovation and growth in the food technology sector in the region.
