Population association urges stakeholders to promote population consciousness

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – As the Cagayan State University (CSU) hosts the two-day International Scientific Conference, officials of the Philippine Population Association (PPA) advocated the promotion of various population-related research results and studies.

Professor Joy Cruz, president of PPA, said they do annual planning as they see the significance of providing information on various population issues, and encouraging support from the government and stakeholders to address the concerns.

Sessions on fertility and migration as key drivers of population change in the Philippines were discussed during the forum.

Former PPA President Dr. Grace Cruz said Filipino migration will soon affect our economy which is why there’s a need for the government to provide better job opportunities within the country.

Over 200 population stakeholders from the country and other parts of the world joined the session to share various demographics, research results, and actions addressing global risks.

She said PPA shared census-based projections and their implications for development.

"While the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is mandated to serve as the overall coordinating, monitoring, and policy-making body of the population program, it has no research function which PPA has," Cruz said.

She also said PPA seeks to promote scientific-based solutions on population-related issues through research and dissemination, and training and extension.

“Every year, we go to different places to promote consciousness on population issues and we help the government in providing expertise and training to the population stakeholders, academe, and communities,” Cruz added.

She also called for the support of media partners to help disseminate research results because there are a lot of researchers but they are not communicated. (PIA-2/G.Baquiran)
