President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, leads the inauguration of the 4th Generation Light Rail Vehicles for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) - Line 1 in Pasay City.

With assistance from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the country welcomed its first batch of 4th generation LRVs in 2021, with Mitsubishi Corporation as the implementing contractor. These will be used for the LRT-1 train system, as well as for the LRT-1 Cavite expansion which is expected to be fully operational by 2027.

The said undertaking forms part of the ‘Capacity Enhancement of Mass Transit Systems in Metro Manila Project’ which supports the expansion of both the LRT-1 and LRT-2, with the aim to improve the capacity of LRT lines in delivering safer, more reliable, and punctual railway system to commuters in the National Capital Region (NCR).
