Military extends aid to victims; condemns NPA ambush as bid to disrupt peace in Quezon

CAMP CAPINPIN, Rizal – The Philippine Army's 2nd Infantry "Jungle Fighter" Division has condemned the New People's Army (NPA) after it staged an ambush that left five Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) members dead and three others wounded near the border of Labo, Camarines Norte and Tangkawayan, Quezon on Friday, September 1.

In a statement, Maj. Gen. Roberto Capulong, Army commander of 2ID, condemned the NPA for “the heinous act that violated human rights and international humanitarian laws.”

“The attack was an attempt by the NPA to disrupt the peace and security that the people of Quezon have been enjoying,” he said.

Capulong condoled with the families of the slain militiamen on Saturday, Sept. 2 and handed over the military’s financial assistance.

He also visited the CAFGU detachment and gave recognition to the survivors before meeting Tagkawayan Mayor Luis Oscar Eleazar Barangay Mapulot offials for a dialogue.

The Army’s Public Affairs Office said on Saturday, Sept 2 that the incident occurred when government forces from the Army’s 85th Infantry Battalion hit an anti-personnel mine while they were conducting peace-keeping patrol in Barangay Mapulot in Tagkawayan.

The military said the explosive devise was prohibited under the United Nations Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

It added the government troops then came under heavy fire from armed individuals believed to be NPA where five government militiamen were killed while one Army soldier and two other militia members were injured.

Capulong praised the bravery and heroism of the government militiamen who lost their lives while serving the country.

He assured the public that the military will continue safeguarding the communities, especially in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections next month.

“Let us not allow the NPA terrorists to take more lives again. Let us be part of the progress and peace in our province. Let us be vigilant, discerning, and protect the security to completely free ourselves from the influence and violence caused by the NPA terrorists,” the official said.

Supported by the military’s 2ID, 201st Brigade, Philippine National Police (PNP), and local officials, the 85th Infantry Battalion (85IB) also provided financial support to CAFGU members who were injured during the encounter.

"The entire 85IB military unit stands in solidarity with the families of the fallen Cafgu members in their time of mourning. Their loyalty and courage in fulfilling their duties for our nation will remain alive and serve as inspiration," the 85IB stated.
