NEA oversees the restoration of EC sites hit by Super Typhoon Odette

Last December 14 2021, Supertyphoon Rai (Odette) entered the Philippines, affecting 44 provinces. In coordination with NEA, 74 affected ECs are currently undergoing recovery measures.

Within the 11 affected regions, 46 Electric Cooperatives (ECs) were able to continue normal operations. The strong winds running with a velocity of up to 220 km per hour, however, managed to interrupt power distribution among 20 ECs. As of December 21, 2021, the cost of these damages amount to P299,998,289.78.

Following the Super Typhoon’s departure towards the South East of Vietnam, NEA Administrator Emmanuel Juaneza immediately flew to Tacloban to meet with the General Managers of Region 8. The priority sites of inspection were Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (SOLECO) and Leyte Electric Cooperatives (LEYECO I, II, III, IV).

The Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) department of NEA reported that out of the cities and municipalities powered by LEYECO V, five have been fully restored as of Sunday, December 19, 2021. These include Calubian, Leyte, San Isidro, Tabango, Palompon. The rest of the affected ECs have been working on restoration following safety measures.

In accordance with the standard disaster risk measures of NEA, ECs have sent the proper warnings to its consumers and communities to help citizens prepare for power interruptions. Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (NONECO), for instance, conducted an Emergency Response Meeting beforehand. Other ECs in regions that expected the typhoon posted emergency measures and warnings.

In anticipation of incoming typhoons, NEA shall continue overseeing preventive and restoration measures among ECs, particularly in following the policies on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, Emergency Restoration Planning, and Electric Cooperatives’ Resiliency Program. (NEA)
