DPWH conducts final inspection before April 5 Inauguration of Binondo-Intramuros Bridge

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Roger G. Mercado and Undersecretary and Build Build Build Chief Implementer Emil K. Sadain conducted final inspection on Monday (April 4, 2022), of the modern state-of-the-art Binondo-Intramuros Bridge Project, a day before the upcoming inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

The bridge connecting two (2) busy districts of Binondo and Intramuros in the City of Manila is the vision turned into a reality under the “Build, Build, Build” Program of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Also present during project inspection were DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Project Directors Benjamin A. Bautista, Ramon A. Arriola III, Sharif Madsmo H. Hasim, Rodrigo I. Delos Reyes, and Johnson V. Domingo.

This iconic bridge project is one (1) of the two (2) China-grant bridges implemented and completed by the DPWH UPMO Operations headed by Undersecretary Sadain.

With a total length of 680 meters, the project involves the construction of four-lane, 70-meter long and 21-meter wide basket-handle tied steel arch bridge.

It aesthetically links Intramuros at Solana Street and Riverside Drive and Binondo at Rentas Street, Plaza del Conde Street and Muelle dela Industria, with a viaduct structure over Estero de Binondo.

The bridge is expected to cater to over 30,000 motorists daily and will improve traffic condition in Metro Manila.

Bike lanes with reflective thermoplastic road lines and protected sidewalks on both sides are also features of the project as part of DPWH program to build safe infrastructure for non-motorized road users.

Undersecretary Sadain said that the opening of Binondo - Intramuros Bridge is only one (1) of the many big-ticket projects in the pipeline to achieve President Duterte’s dream for better road network and increased transportation capacity in Metro Manila.

As part of the overall Metro Manila Logistics Network, a total of 12 bridges are being eyed over Pasig River, Marikina River, and the Manggahan Floodway, three (3) of which were completed, five (5) under procurement (2 JICA and 3 ADB funding), three (3) under financing negotiation with China, and one (1) under private initiative.
