PASAY CITY -- Precautionary measures are in place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) following appeals from the state weather bureau PAGASA to prepare for Super Typhoon “Karding”.

MIAA General Manager Cesar Chiong since this morning has been doing his rounds of the Terminals reminding the management team to prepare for a worst case scenario. The airport chief has activated the MIAA Emergency Response Teams to implement standard operating procedures as provided in the MIAA Airport Emergency Plan for severe weather disturbance.

The engineering and operations teams have started tying down passenger boarding bridges, securing billboards within the vicinity of the four (4) Terminals, pruning trees and checking airside and landside facilities in anticipation of the significant effects the Typhoon may bring to airport operations.

GM Chiong together with Captain Ed Diaz of CAAP and PAGASA representatives in a meeting with the airlines this afternoon enjoined airline operators to employ aircraft evacuation if they deem necessary under the circumstances. He also urged them to remind their ground handlers to keep all ground equipment in safe areas and tie them down to prevent harm to people and damage to property.

Some airlines have cancelled domestic and international flights and were advised by Management to submit to MIAA their proposed timings for their recovery flights.

"I have lifted the daily maintenance closure of the international runway to give the airlines ample room to plan their recovery flights, "said GM Chiong.

The MIAA Emergency Services Department is on alert for any aircraft or structural emergency or any need to respond to sick calls. The warehouse will be kept open for any need for supplies while service vehicles and drivers at the motorpool are ready for dispatch anytime.

The Airport Police Department on the other hand has been ordered to intensify mobile and foot patrol to forestall attempts to deliberately disrupt operations amidst preparations for the typhoon.

The MIAA has earlier requested NAIA food concessionaires to beef-up their stocks in the event passengers of delayed or cancelled flights opt to stay and wait in NAIA.

The airport chief reminds passengers to be vigilant of the developing situation and closely monitor the status of flights through airline websites or social media pages before heading to NAIA. He also advises them to monitor areas in the vicinity of their residences and roads leading to NAIA for flooding advisories.
