NEDA calls on youth to be partners for change

BAGUIO CITY –Assistant Regional Director  Stephanie F. Christiansen of the National Economic and Development Authority  Cordillera  Regional Office (NEDA-CAR) calls on  the youth to be partners for change during the 9th Philippines I Transform! Young Leaders Convention held on October 6, 2022 here.

Christiansen shared the implementation status of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. She underscored that out of the 17 goals, the country is on track on  nine goals specifically, Goals (1) Ending poverty; (2) Zero hunger; (6) Clean water and sanitation; (10) Reduced inequalities; (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities; (13): Climate Action; (14) Life below water; (15) Life on land, and  (17) Partnerships for the goals.

The country is lagging behind in five goals as follows, Goals (4) Quality Education; (7) Affordable and Clean energy; (8) Decent work and economic growth; (9) Industry, innovation, and infrastructure,  and (12) Responsible consumption and production.

Moreover, the country retained its pace in three goals namely, Goals (3) Good health and well-being; (5) Gender equality, and (16) Peace and justice, and strong institutions.

The report was based on the 2022 Philippines’ Voluntary National Review prepared by NEDA which was submitted to the United Nations (UN) High Level Political Forum on the SDGs.

Christiansen emphasized that in order to ensure that no one is left behind, the implementation of the SDGs is through the whole-of-nation approach where everyone has a role.

She posed the challenge to the 1,400 youth leaders and young professionals from all over the country who attended the conference to be proactive and responsible citizens by doing the right thing.

The convention is an annual activity organized by the Youth Lead Philippines to influence and empower youth leaders to think, work, and act together and be active stakeholders in the advocacy and localization of the UN SDGs.

The global goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by addressing global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate change, environment degradation, peace and justice.

The collective aspiration of Filipinos embodied in the Ambisyon Nation 2040 is aligned to the SDGs which is also the core of the development plans of the country and at the regional levels.

The Cordillera Regional Development Council  through its Sub-committee on Sustainable Development Goals coordinates the implementation of the global goals at the region and serves as an avenue for stakeholders to provide policy recommendations to achieve these by 2030. The Committee was created in 2019 and NEDA Regional Director  Susan A. Sumbeling heads the same.(NEDA-CAR)
