CLAVERIA, Misamis Oriental (PIA)--One high-powered firearm, two backpacks, and subversive documents were recovered during an armed clash between government troops from the 58th Infantry "Dimalulupig" Battalion (58IB) and the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) at Sitio Mangilit, Barangay Bal-ason, Gingoog City.
Troops of the 58IB acted upon reports received from a concerned civilian when they encountered an estimated number of 15 CTGs believed to be armed elements of the SR SDG Eagles, SRC-1, NCMRC.
The said encounter happened at around 9:15 a.m., December 19, and it lasted for about 15 minutes. Former rebels (FRs) from this unit disclosed that the old Battle Dress Attire (BDA) uniforms recovered were being used by CTGs to lure civilians as military personnel and conduct atrocities against potential targets.
"I am reiterating our call to the remnants of the CTGs who are still hiding in the hinterlands to lay down their arms and return to the folds of the law and reunite with their families in celebrating the birth of Christ and the coming new year," 58IB Commanding Officer LtCol Christian Uy said.
Uy also expressed his gratitude to the community for their prompt and accurate reporting to the nearest patrol base.
"I am grateful to the people of Barangay Bal-ason for cooperating with us; we hope other neighboring communities will do the same to end the insurgency in Misamis Oriental entirely; Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all!" Uy shared.
The captured firearms and war materials were delivered to the battalion headquarters for proper disposal. (58IB/PIA-10/Misamis Oriental)
