ZAMBOANG CITY, 10 July (PIA) – The Western Mindanao State University and the Zamboanga City Council’s Committee on Agriculture and Agrarian Relations agreed to collaborate to improve the local rice industry.

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) College of Agriculture and WMSU College of Computing Studies represented by University President Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena and the Office of City Councilor Joselito A. Macrohon, Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and Agrarian Relations signed a memorandum of understanding on July 4, 2023 to improve the rice industry in Zamboanga City through the application of computing studies and agricultural expertise.

The memorandum aims to create a comprehensive database for rice that will bridge the gaps in knowledge and provide policy makers and researchers with tools in making evidence-based decisions that will shape the future of rice production, distribution and sustainability in the city.

“This MOU demonstrates our commitment to supporting the community and WMSU is fully dedicated to this project given the crucial role of agriculture in enhancing the lives of people,” Dr. Ochotorena said.

Under the MOU, WMSU and the Office of Hon. Macrohon will conduct joint studies, surveys, data analysis, research and development to identify challenges, opportunities, and best practices in rice production, while implementing advanced technologies and systems, providing training programs for farmers, agricultural workers and relevant stakeholders and the adoption of innovative agricultural practices and technologies through legislation, policy development and advocacy.

City Councilor Macrohon expressed gratitude to WMSU for responding to his call for a collaborative effort meant to assist the farmers in the city and for sharing his advocacy in food security. “When I thought about this project, the first thing that came into my mind was WMSU. Now, I am happy that we are working together as a team.”
