Marawi teachers undergo peace education training workshop

MARAWI CITY (PIA)--During times of crisis, teachers are the real heroes. They work to protect and support their students and show them an example of how to behave in such situations.

Oliver Apud, Peacebuilding and Context Adaptation Officer at World Vision, facilitated a unique educational initiative through a training workshop. This gathering brought together teachers from Marawi City to work together on advancing education development focused on fostering social cohesion and peace through education.

Marawi City teachers attended the training workshop to learn the basic principles of peace, acquire knowledge about peace, understand the dynamics of conflict, and explore how conflicts evolve into fear and violence.

The event was designed to help build teachers’ well-being, manage stress, and build resilience during emergencies.

Nabil Cosain of Angoyao National High School emphasized the crucial role of resilience-building in safeguarding the well-being of children.

“The training equipped me with the knowledge and skills in sharing peace education. Peace is within. We should start with ourselves. When peace is gained, everything will follow. That is why there is a need to learn various approaches to promoting peace through education," Cosain said.

Mohammad Ershad Sangca, the Division Peace Education Coordinator, reiterated that "Peace education is a need and an urgent matter that must be embedded in the Department of Education (DepEd) curriculum.”

As such, he recommends writing a Division Memorandum on cascading the Peace Education module to all schools in Marawi.

World Vision Philippines spearheaded the Trainers Training on Peace Education to create a pool of peace education facilitators in the area. (World Vision PH/PIA Lanao del Sur)
