Former Pres. Duterte, CGPA attend 10ID change of command rites

DAVAO DE ORO -- Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Lieutenant General Roy M. Galido, the Commanding General of the Philippine Army (CGPA), attended the Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony of Major General Jose Eriel M. Niembra at Camp General Manuel T. Yan Senior in Mawab, Davao De Oro, Sept. 15, 2023.

MGen. Niembra retired from military service after 36 years, five months, and 14 days, which began with his admission to the Philippine Military Academy on April 1, 1987.

During the event, Brigadier General Allan D. Hambala officially assumed command as the 16th Commander of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division.

The Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony drew the presence of former President Duterte and CGPA Lieutenant General Galido, who both were appreciative of Niembra’s leadership and performance.

In his message, Lt. Gen. Galido highlighted the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families in serving the people.

"There is always personal sacrifice. The personal sacrifice General Niembra gave to serve the people cannot be equated to

the number of medals we have given to him. The sacrifice of the family cannot be equated by the loud applause. It's really difficult. But what gives us a sense of satisfaction is when we see people we have served well, and when we see our men become better public servants," he said.

Meanwhile, former President Duterte praised Niembra's leadership and accomplishments in the fight against insurgency, terrorism, and other threats to national security.

"I give my utmost thanks to Major General Niembra for your unwavering dedication, outstanding leadership, and tireless commitment during your tenure as Commander of the 10th Infantry Division. The entire Filipino people are indebted to your service," he said.

During his tenure, Niembra emphasized the critical role of Stability Operations in preventing the resurgence and re-entry of armed groups into the Davao Region. Under his leadership, Eric Jun Casilao alias Elian, the Secretary of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, was successfully neutralized.

On the other hand, Brig. Gen. Hambala, prior to his appointment as the acting Commander of the 10th Infantry Division, served in several key positions including as the 10ID Assistant Division Commander, Brigade Commander of the 401st Infantry Brigade, Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations (G3) of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division, and as the Battalion Commander of the 15th IB.
