Danish Ambassador visits WESCOM, underscores closer cooperation

WESTERN COMMAND, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan -- His Excellency Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin, the Ambassador of Denmark to the Philippines, paid a courtesy call to Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos PN, Commander of the AFP Western Command (WESCOM), on Thursday, October 5. The meeting took place at the Wescom Headquarters in Camp General Artemio Ricarte, Puerto Princesa City.

The discussions revolved primarily on supporting a rules-based international order consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), signaling Denmark's commitment to upholding international maritime laws. Both parties emphasized the importance of cooperation among nations in promoting stability and peace in the region.

Ambassador Mellbin also expressed keen interest in exploring business ventures and renewable energy sources in Palawan, particularly offshore opportunities. Recognizing the potential of Palawan's natural resources, the Danish ambassador expressed his desire to contribute to sustainable economic development in the province.

Vice Admiral Carlos and Ambassador Mellbin also discussed the management of security in the region and explored opportunities for direct cooperation between Denmark and the Philippines, especially in maritime security to further strengthen bilateral relations.

"Our commitment to direct cooperation in the area of maritime security is crucial. Together, Denmark and the Philippines can bolster regional stability and ensure the safety and security of our shared waterways," said Vice Admiral Carlos.

In a gesture towards environmental conservation, Ambassador Mellbin actively participated in Wescom's greening program. During his visit, he planted 50 seeds of Langka (jackfruit) tree, symbolizing his commitment to support environmental initiatives and sustainable practices.

The courtesy call between Ambassador Mellbin and Vice Admiral Carlos marks another step in strengthening the ties between Denmark and the Philippines. The visit showcased Denmark's willingness to engage in discussions pertinent to the region's security and economic development, while also fostering cooperation in environmental conservation.
