Redefine decision-making through modern family planning methods

Even as societies embrace progress and innovation, modern family planning methods remain accessible to help improve the lives of families.

Modern methods have expanded the horizons, offering a wide range of choices that cater to various needs and preferences, and the advancements in technology have transformed fertility awareness methods.

The National Family Planning Month celebration this year aims to create awareness on the importance and benefits of family planning in promoting the overall health and well-being of the population.

The Department of Health (DOH) introduces new family planning methods to help the families in their decision-making especially for the adolescent pregnancies. Family planning, as defined by DOH, is having the desired number of children and when you want to have them by using safe and effective modern methods.

Modern methods of contraception include the pill, ligation, intrauterine device or IUD, injectables, implants, male and female condom, vasectomy, and emergency contraceptives. While historically, most contraceptive methods focused on women, modern family planning includes innovative options for men as well.

“Planning your pregnancy can help you have a healthy baby. Babies who are planned are more likely to be born healthy than babies who aren't planned,” said Dr. Cheryl Sarmiento, Medical Officer of DOH-9.

Dr. Sarmiento also emphasized the importance of family planning where it helps families to achieve healthy spacing of pregnancy, avoid social and financial problems that might face, and can also expect women and children are more likely to survive because they are protected from health risk that may occur before, during or after child birth.

This month’s celebration also emphasizes the vital link between family planning and maternal and child health. Adequate spacing between pregnancies reduces health risks for both mothers and babies, contributing to healthier outcomes. By promoting family planning, communities are advocating for the well-being of women and children, bolstering the foundation of strong families and societies.

DOH-9 recently reported an increase of adolescent pregnancy cases in Zamboanga Peninsula from 5,451 in 2021 to 8,140 in 2022. However, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate also increased to 34.85% of the total population in ZamPen.

The youth often overlook family planning conversations which take center stage during this National Family Planning Month. Comprehensive sex education programs empower them with knowledge about reproductive health, responsible decision-making, and contraceptive options.

DOH’s ‘Take The Safe Sex Pledge’ Campaign aims to empower people about their decisions in life when it comes to their future, safety, and security. Every individual is encouraged to take part by raising their right hand and take the pledge to fight against ignorance, regrets, and doubts while taking control of what is true, safe, and best to build a Healthy Pilipinas. This campaign also aims to embrace sexual habits and transform them into healthier ones. (KSA/RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
