Army’s 2ID HQ to re-open for social activities

TANAY, Rizal (PIA) – What started as an idea to open the camp for people wanting to see a general, Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Division (2ID), dubbed as “Jungle Fighter” is now a place for educational and recreational purposes.

To Agustiniana Avelino, 2ID’s Multi Sectoral Advisory Board (MSAB) Chairperson,  they opened the camp because locals stated they seldom see a military general and as a community, they wanted to be known as part of the camp.

“In-open namin kasi sa community, tingin nila sa kampo ay exclusive for the soldiers. Istrikto sila na parang may sikreto sila sa loob. So why not open, kasi ‘yung iba hindi pa daw sila nakakakita ng general, that’s when I brought up the idea to the camp commander na buksan natin para makita nila kung ano yung ginagawa ng mga sundalo natin” Avelino said in an interview with Philippine Information Agency IV-A.

Camp General Mateo Capinpin originally opened to the public and stakeholders in 2015 when the MSAB envisioned a transformation of the camp.

Soldiers are ready to assist those who would conduct their team building activities in the camp where they can also try golfing and shooting.

“Nagsimula noong 2015, I put up an idea on a Octoberfest.

We wrote to the barangay captain, and to the other members ng community like schools, school heads, mga representatives of areas. So, they came [and it was] very successful. It was not only income generation for us para kami ang mag-aim na makatulong sa mga projects ng camp, ng mga sundalo. It was also a chance with the people to get involve and to see what they’re [sundalo] doing inside the camp,” she added.

The MSAB encourages guests to take pride and promote the camp through social media to proudly show off the good weather inside the camp and its improved and notable spots.

The weather [in Camp Capinpin] is good, the place is pristine pa talaga siya and it's so [near] to Manila instead of going further North ito talaga 1 hour or 55 mins from Manila,” Avelino stated.

As COVID-19 spreads in 2020, the Army was forced to close the camp to the public. By then, they have improved the facilities and added more amenities available for recreational activities.

This year, 2ID’s Camp Capinpin will re-open to showcase what’s new inside the camp as they continue to let the general public know that they are part of their community.

Within the camp, one can experience the life of a soldier in action with their  9-member army squad in full battle gear and camouflage who demonstrate their combat formations and equipment in an obstacle course. Physical activities such as crawling in mud, zipline, rock wall climbing and rappelling are available for guests to enjoy.

Aside from physical activities, the 2ID launched the 2ID Acoustic Harmonies, a group which showcases the talented soldiers within their ranks, to serenade visitors during fellowship and social activities.

Camp Capinpin also maintains its own museum where people can see the old military equipment such as weapons, explosives and vehicles of the Armed Forces.

Avelino praised the initiative of the Army in developing the camp, while she encouraged other camps to do the same as part of their duty to serve and protect the people.

I think, all the camps, military camps in the Philippines should do the same diba, para its part of serving the people and making them part of what you do, andyan sila happy sila nakikita nila ang mga soldiers are doing their jobs” she said.
