ISABELA CITY, Basilan (PIA) – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has pledged to complete the on-going extension project of the Isabela City Port by November this year.

The commitment was made during an inspection by Basilan Representative Mujiv Hataman, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, PPA engineers  and city engineers of LGU Isabela City.

Basilan Representative Mujiv Hataman, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia-Turabin Hataman together with PPA engineers and city engineers of LGU Isabela City inspected the on-going construction of Isabela City port improvement project.

Basilan Representative Hataman emphasized the importance of completing the project on time, as any delay could potentially pose challenges on the part of PPA. He stressed that the port plays a vital role in the local economy of Basilan, with cargo vessels forming a significant part of the trade industry.

Engr. Olyver Fortich, Project Engineer of PPA Port Construction and Maintenance Department (PCMD) in Manila, pledged to complete the Isabela City port improvement project by November 2023.

He also expressed that meeting the November 2023 deadline is critical to ensure that the port's infrastructure is adequate for the growing passengers, which currently stands at around 4,000 per day. He has also requested additional vessels to alleviate the pressure on existing transportation infrastructure and promote growth and development in the region.

Basilan Representative Hataman had voiced concerns during recent budget deliberations over the lack of progress on the project, which began in 2017. He said based on his observations, he estimated around 80%-85% completion, but PPA engineers said the actual figure was more like 98%.

Engineer Olyver Fortich, the Project Engineer of the PPA Port Construction and Maintenance Department (PCMD) in Manila, mentioned that based on the physical aspects, the construction progress has reached 98%. This assessment considers the presence of all necessary materials and equipment on-site. He also acknowledged that logistical challenges had caused delays but expressed confidence that the project would be completed soon with the materials and supplies now available.

Representative Hataman and the PPA both acknowledged the importance of the project to the local economy in Basilan, which relies heavily on cargo vessels for trade. They also agreed to monitor the progress of the project regularly in order to ensure its successful completion.

“We will have regular monitoring as with permission from the head of PPA to ensure that the project remains on track and progress smoothly”, Representative Hataman said.

Engineer Fortich expressed that despite some challenges, the PPA has been working diligently to ensure timelythat delivery of necessary materials and supplies for the project. At present, these materials have been delivered to the construction site. He expressed his strong commitment to completing the project by November this year, giving Isabeleños the chance to have a merry Christmas by December.

The Isabela City port extension project which commenced in 2017 with a Notice to Proceed issued in November that same year has a total project cost of nearly P382 million. (KSA/RVC/NDR/PIA-Basilan with reports from Rhonaleen F. Natividad)
