What Taguig Residents Contributed for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Are you willing to share your hair for the welfare of cancer patients?

The residents of Taguig City have effectively demonstrated this initiative of coming together as a community to catalyze a "Transformative, Lively, and Caring" change.

To support the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the city organized the heartfelt "Buhok Ko, sHair Ko" hair donation event in collaboration with Hair for Hope to symbolize their community support for individuals battling breast cancer and for those who sacrificed their crowning glory as a side effect of their medical treatment.

The event, which took place Monday, October 16, at the People's Hall of SM Aura, not only promoted inclusivity but also demonstrated the spirit of solidarity as 51 individuals, including men and women, and participants as young as 10 years old, joined together to donate a piece of their hair.

"Ang Taguig, sa layunin nitong maging Transformative, Lively, at Caring agenda ay naglalayong itaas ang kamalayan patungkol sa cancer sa suso sa pamamagitan sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa komunidad at paglulunsad sa iba't ibang programa upang itaas ang kaalaman ng publiko," the Taguig City Public Information Office told PIA-NCR. (Taguig, with its goal of being Transformative, Lively, and Caring agenda aims to raise awareness about breast cancer through community engagement and launching various programs to raise public awareness.)

"Sa lungsod ng Taguig prayoridad natin ang kaligtasan ng lahat," the PIO added. (In Taguig City, everyone's safety is our priority.)

Cutting a minimum of 12 inches (30.5 cm) of hair from each donor, the talented hairdressers skillfully performed their profession, signifying their commitment to the cause and their desire to help improve the lives of cancer patients.

The gathered donation of 51 hair bundles is a heartfelt gesture that expresses compassion and hope for people facing the challenges of cancer treatment. Every strand of hair collected with the greatest love and support will be made into a wig, providing hope and confidence to individuals dealing with cancer treatment's physical and psychological side effects.

Through these initiatives, Taguig emphasizes its proactive approach to community participation and social responsibility. The city maintains a culture of compassion and empowerment by spreading awareness and encouraging a sense of community.

October is a significant month for breast cancer awareness, stressing the importance of understanding, preventing, and treating this common disease.

Numerous programs, campaigns, and activities are planned across the country and throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month to emphasize the value of early diagnosis, scientific breakthroughs, and comprehensive treatment for people affected by the disease.

In the Philippines, breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer. At least three out of every 100 women in the country are anticipated to acquire a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, according to prior data published by the Department of Health (DOH).

With a total of 86,484 instances of various forms of cancer recorded, the most recent figures show a significant number of cancer cases in the Philippines. Breast cancer makes up 27,163 of those cases.

Of this figure, at least 9,926 Filipino women have lost their lives to breast cancer, making it the country's third-leading cause of cancer-related fatalities despite efforts to combat it. (PIA-NCR)
