Kapatagan mayor spearheads veggie growing amid pandemic

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--Mayor Raida Maglangit of Kapatagan town in Lanao del Sur spearheaded a communal gardening project to assist Kapatagan women to have vegetables that they can consume or even sell to the market for additional income amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis.

During the July 19 (Monday) episode of Network Briefing News with Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, Maglangit said the local government unit (LGU) of Kapatagn gave away seeds and seedlings as well as organic fertilizers to women residents of the municipality who are interested to start vegetable gardening.  

Kapatagan mayor Raida Maglangit shares during the Network Briefing News with Communications Secretary Martin Andanar her strategy of empowering women in her municipality amid the health crisis.

"Nagkaroon po kami ng pagbibigay sa kanila ng mga seedlings, mga organic fertilizer. Tinuruan sila paano ang paggamit ng organic fertilizer at tamang pagtatanim with the help of our Department of Agriculture," she said.

[We provided them with seedlings, organic fertilizers. We taught them how to use organic fertilizer and the proper way of planting, with the help of our Department of Agriculture.]

The mayor said she personally led the plowing and planting to set an example for the women.

According to her, she is encouraging the people of Kapatagan to engage in farming and gardening to ensure food sufficiency during emergencies like the current health crisis. (APB/PIA-ICIC)
