Crime incidents in Dgte down by 31.87%

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Nov. 8 (PIA) -- Dumaguete City Police Office has reported that the number of crime incidents dropped by 31.87%, from 957 cases recorded in January to October 2020 to 652 for the same period in 2021.

P/Lt. Col. Joeson Parallag, acting chief-of-police of Dumaguete City, said the decrease in crime incidents is the result of the strategic deployment of personnel using the crime clock, map, intelligence, police operations, checkpoints, and massive information dissemination on crime prevention tips.

In a City Peace and Order Council meeting, Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo and Liga ng mga Barangay President Dionie Amores, who sits as chairperson of the Peace and Order Council, lauded the Philippine National Police in Dumaguete for the significant decline in crime incidents, and manifested their continued support to the law enforcement agencies to keep the city residents safe.

The drop in index crimes includes murder, homicide, physical injury and rape, and crimes against property such as robbery, theft, carnapping/carjacking and cattle rustling.

Five barangays, namely Balugo, Banilad, Buñao, Mangnao and Tabuc-tubig, registered zero index crime this year (January to October 2021) while Poblacion 1, Pobacion 5, Bajumpandan, Cantil-e, and Motong reported only one crime incident for the whole year.

In contrast, Poblacion 3, an area of convergence and center of commercial establishments, reported the most number of index crimes both in 2020 and in 2021 at 16 and 22 cases, respectively.

Parallag said the other barangays with a high number of index crimes are barangays Daro (10), Bagacay (8), Candau-ay (8), and Taclobo (6).

Only barangays Balugo and Tabuctubig consistently reported zero index crimes for the same period both in 2020 and 2021, while Banilad, which reported 11 in 2020, managed to bring down the crime rate to zero in 2021.

However, the number of rape cases increased from six in 2020 to 17 in 2021, which are now filed in court, Parallag said.

From eight murder cases in 2020, only one murder case was reported in 2021 in Brgy. Taclobo, which has also been filed in court. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from CPIO)
