DOJ updates UN on PH justice reforms

QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla is in Geneva, Switzerland to join the 52nd Regular Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC).

Secretary Remulla aims to update the HRC and other partners with the reforms in the government’s justice sector under the Marcos administration.

Today, March 1, he is scheduled to speak at the High-Level Segment of the 52nd Regular Session of the HRC to highlight the importance of upholding sovereignty and joining international solidarity to promote and protect human rights.

On the same day, the Secretary will meet with H.E V Vaclav Balek, President of the Human Rights Council; Mr. Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Honorable Tim Watts MP, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Australia; and His Excellency Majid Al Suwaidi of the UAE, Director General of COP 28.

On February 28, Secretary Remulla joined the panel discussion on Prison and Justice Sector Reforms and Human Rights organized by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, the Philippines, Norway, and Thailand. He shared the progress of the Philippine government to toughen the country’s justice system, mainly about decongesting the jail and detention facilities, de-clogging courts, and improving the vulnerable sectors’ access to justice.

The Secretary is also scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with the European Union’s Special Representatives for Human Rights.

The Philippine delegation is composed of Secretary Remulla, other officials from DOJ, and the Permanent Mission of the Philippines in Geneva. (ARB, PIA-CPSD)
