BIR-9 urges Filipinos to pay correct taxes

Tax Campaign launched in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY, 9 Mar (PIA) – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will intensify its tax collection efforts and urge Filipinos to pay correct taxes in order to help government serve its people well.

BIR-IX led Thursday’s (March 9) Tax Campaign kick-off ceremony in Zamboanga City with the theme “Tulong-tulong sa Pagbangon, Kapit Kamay sa Pag-ahon, Buwis na Wasto, Alay para sa Pilipino.”

In his video message, BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr thanked the tax payers for their contribution in the Php254 Billion tax collection of 2022. He revealed that for 2023, BIR’s collection goal is at 2.599 trillion pesos, which covers almost fifty percent of the record high 5.268 trillion-peso national budget.

“These are not just amazing umbers, but they represent how heavy our responsibilities are. Tax officials, tax practitioners, and tax payers, we need to step-up and work together as the country tries to stream back into full year post-pandemic,” he said.

The commissioner revealed that the bureau will focus on improving its tax collection systems and services to encourage and enhance public’s voluntary compliance.

“Naniwala po kami na karamihan sa ating mga negosyante ay mahal ang ating bansa. Gustong magbayad ng tamang buwis. Gustong makatulong sa ating mga kababayan. Pero nahihirapan lang sa kumplikadong sistema,” he said as he explained the reforms that the bureau will introduce soon.

(We believe that many of our business owners and entrepreneurs love our country; who wanted to pay correct taxes, who wanted to help the Filipino people; but are having difficulties due to complicated systems.)

Meanwhile, City Mayor John M. Dalipe recognizes that “tax is the lifeblood of the nation, upon which, the State and its agencies are able to discharge their functions and sustain services for the good of the people and the nation.”

He stressed the need to increase public engagement and participation in governance by paying correct taxes in order for the city and the nation to fully recover from the pandemic, i.e., through judicious tax administration and efficient revenue collection systems and processes.

The launching event was participated by Zamboanga City officials, representatives from National Government Agencies, top tax paying individuals and corporations, withholding tax agents, real estate brokers, Chamber of Commerce, and Regional District Offices in Zamboanga Peninsula and the Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-Tawi Provinces, among others.
