Zambo city holds bamboo planting, growing activity

ZAMBOANGA CITY, March 24 (PIA) -- Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe led a bamboo planting and growing activity on Friday morning, in Sitio Fortunato, barangay La Paz. The activity is in line with the Massive Watershed Reforestation and Rehabilitation Project of the city government, which is one of the priority programs of the Dalipe administration.

In his short speech, Mayor Dalipe thanks the participants for caring for the environment and shares his aspiration to plant more trees during his term.

“As mayor, my goal is we plant one million trees,” Dalipe said.

Various government agencies who share the same commitment joined and support the environmental cause.

According to the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR), who organized the event, bamboo has been chosen for the tree planting activity because it has 85-95% survival rate, absorbs more water and consumes more carbon dioxide. Among other environmental uses, bamboos also help as barriers to prevent soil erosion and will improve the quality of water – which are among the strategies in the approved Management and Development Plan of the Ayala watershed and the Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) of Zamboanga City.

The activity is also in compliance with the approved city's action plan for Ayala River Water Quality Management Area (ARWQMA) under the Philippine Clean Air Act of 2004. The Ayala watershed has a total area of 3,519 hectares and has 1,133 total number of population.

More than just a tree planting, but a tree growing activity, Dalipe stressed that after sometime, the trees planted will be checked and assessed to ensure its survival. (NBE/CCP/PIA9)
