DSWD, PNP share tips for children's online protection

CEBU CITY, Cebu, March 22 (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine National Police’s Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 7 (PNP-RACU7), and its non-government organization partner, World Hope Philippines, have urged children and parents to practice safety tips in order to prevent being victimized by several abuses happening in an online environment.

"Limit your screen time, do not share your social media accounts’ passwords, and strengthen ang inyung privacy and security settings," said Theresa Lape, a social worker from World Hope Philippines, during the Kapihan sa PIA program conducted by the Philippine Information Agency 7 on March 22.

Lape also urged children and parents to avoid posting personal information on social media platforms and ignore those unknown people who will send them sensitive content.

Meanwhile, DSWD encouraged the parents to spend valuable time with their children, as it is critical to guiding and protecting them against any abuses that occured in an online setting.

"Usa pud ka tip is parent interaction and proper communication sa ilang mga children, importante man gyud nga ato silang ubanan, kay adto natu makuha ang impormasyon sa kung unsa ang ilang gibuhat," said DSWD-7 Social Welfare Officer IV and Children Sector Focal Ligaya Dael.

The PNP-Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit on their end also reminded children and parents to "THINK" before posting anything on social media.

"Sa amoa "THINK" ra gyud among mapahimangno, ang pasabot ani before mo post dapat inyung tan-awon: is it True, is it Helpful,  is it Inspiring, is it Necessary, ug is it Kind. Kung mahimu katung mga dili importante natung i share, dili natu i share," said PNP-RACU7 Chief of Operation PTLt. Gaudioso Morte in the same forum.

The DSWD, PNP-RACU, and World Hope Philippines have joined forces to promote and support the "Safer Internet Day Campaign for Children Philippines," which seeks to spread awareness on the emerging needs to ensure the protection of children from risks and abuses brought by misuse of the internet or a lack of awareness on internet safety.

The campaign is also in accordance with their mandate as members of the Inter Agency Councils Against Trafficking, Child Pornography, and Violence Against Women and Their Children (IACAT7-ACP-VACW). (RGC/PIA7 Cebu)
