KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) -- As the country culminates the observation of National ICT Month, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) continues to provide initiatives to educate individuals and mitigate risks involving cybersecurity.
During the Regional Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Forum here on Thursday (June 29), DICT XII and Mainland BARMM Regional Director Alimbzar Asum highlighted their collaborative initiatives, educational programs, and partnerships with schools and universities.
“By introducing cybersecurity education at an early stage, students are being equipped with the necessary skills to combat cyber threats, thus laying the groundwork for a cyber-resilient society,” Asum pointed out.
RD Asum said they have been integrating proactive measures through workshops, seminars, and lectures to safeguard the youth against evolving digital risks.
The official then urged the citizens to learn how to conquer the so-called “digital divide.”
“Cybersecurity is everybody’s concern. Tayo ngayon ay namumuhay sa dalawang mundo. Ang real world o actual world at internet o cyber world. Kailangan din po natin matutunan kung paano matuto mamuhay sa internet world,” Asum said.
In recent years, authorities have reported a significant surge in cyber threats, ranging from phishing and identity theft to ransomware attacks and data breaches, highlighting the urgent need to bolster cybersecurity defenses and foster a secure digital environment.
Acknowledging this growing concern, DICT has embarked on a collaborative mission to raise awareness and promote cybersecurity practices.
Asum also called on citizens to be more vigilant and report incidents promptly to allow law enforcement agencies to take swift action.
The cybersecurity forum, attended by over 300 stakeholders, was part of the DICT's celebration of National ICT Month this June.
The observance of the event is pursuant to Proclamation Number 1521, series of 2008, which recognizes the vital role of ICT in nation-building. The theme for this year is "Connecting Communities, Enriching Lives, Forging a Digital Future for the Philippines.” (ORVR - PIA South Cotabato)
