Kumbati ZamPen Cancer Support Group marks first anniversary with cancer fair

PAGADIAN CITY, 22 Sept (PIA) - In a bid to raise awareness about cancer and provide much-needed support to patients and their families, the Kumbati Zampen Cancer Support Group is gearing up to celebrate its first-year anniversary with a cancer fair dubbed “A Fair to Remember” on Sunday, September 24.

The group, primarily led by dedicated women professionals in the province, has been actively working towards improving the lives of cancer patients and promoting awareness of the disease.

Dr. Aileen G. Hidalgo, a driving force behind the group, underscored the pivotal role of such support networks. “Napamatud-an naman gud na nga kung adunay support group sa usa ka lugar, mas naa kini effect sa survival sa atong cancer patients. Adunay effect sa mental well-being and proven na kini,” she said.

(It has been proven that if there is a support group in one place, it has a greater effect on the survival of our cancer patients. It has an effect on mental well-being and it has been proven.)

With a mission to educate and heighten awareness about cancer throughout the region, the group is orchestrating a cancer fair—a pioneering initiative in the province, to commemorate their first year of relentless dedication.

The fair's diverse lineup of activities encompasses a poster-making contest for junior and senior high school students, a pre-loved bazaar aptly named "Ex Ko, New Love Mo," complimentary massages and haircuts provided by TESDA, a wellness clinic forged in collaboration with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), yoga and Zumba sessions, as well as engaging raffles and games. The fair's goal is to dispel common misconceptions about cancer while fostering an interactive space for the community to gain vital insights into the disease.

A touching display of solidarity comes from the "Warriors in Me" Cancer Support Group in Baguio City, pledging to generously supply knockers free of charge to cancer survivors.

Kumbati's visionary plans extend to advocating for a dedicated cancer center within the province. Their pursuit is underscored by heartfelt letters sent to district representatives, urging support for this vital project.

While Kumbati presently lacks the capacity to provide financial assistance, their commitment lies in ensuring that local cancer patients are well-informed about the array of medical services and resources at their disposal.

“Financially, as of now,  we cannot guarantee help in terms of finances because we’re just starting. However, with your help, we need to disseminate the information that cancer treatment is available in Pagadian City,” Dr. Babie Lucero affirmed.

For further information and inquiries, kindly reach out to the Kumbati Zampen Cancer Support Group via their Facebook group or visit the cancer fair on September 24 at the Plaza Luz Covered Court in Pagadian City. (RVC/EDT/HTB/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
