100,000 Zamboangeño Senior Citizens receive quarterly 1,000 cash aid

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct. 3 (PIA) – Approximately 100,000 senior citizens in Zamboanga City receive quarterly Php1,000 cash assistance from the City Government of Zamboanga.

The payout is part of the Local Government Unit’s Social Amelioration Program (SAP) for the senior citizens based on City Budget Ordinance 751 from the 2023 supplemental budget of Zamboanga City, setting aside the amount of Php100-million for the target beneficiaries.

Under the guidelines, all living senior citizens of Zamboanga City, who are ID holders and bonafide residents of Zamboanga City for at least six months, with or without social pension and other types of remuneration, are entitled to receive the SAP of P1,000 each every quarter. To ensure proper and smooth payout process, the recipients will receive the financial assistance through direct cash distribution scheme on a quarterly basis to be facilitated by the City Treasurer’s Office.

Moreover, Zamboanga City also joins the celebration of Elderly Filipino Week 2023 from October 1 to 7, highlighting the significant contributions of senior citizens to the community and nation building.

Mayor John Dalipe emphasized the directive to the City Social Welfare and Development Office to strictly monitor the implementation of discounts and privileges granted to senior citizens under the law, specifically the 20% discount and VAT exemption during purchase of medical supplies, as well as transportation fares and purchases in restaurants and other recreational facilities including movie houses, as well as funeral parlors.

The National Commission for Senior Citizens (NCSC) with the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP) prepared the activities for the senior citizens including the celebration of the Holy Mass, tree planting activity, medical mission and closing program showcasing talents of the senior citizens. Hence, other local and national government agencies are also encourage to join and support the celebration by putting up banners in their offices.

Region 9 FSCAP President Madalena Marcos also shared that some of the priority needs of the sector are medicines, personal necessities and livelihood program. The celebration aims to encourage LGU and citizens to give value to the welfare of elderly Filipinos. “Let us take care of them, because you will only have one lolo and lola or parents in this lifetime,” Marcos said.
